Xcaret Park - Mayan Section

Xcaret park is the eco park next to our resort. They are affiliated and part of their park includes some ruins. It's a very popular place, and a must visit if you are down here. We just walked from the resort to the park. One day admission is included in our package.

This entry is about one section of the park - dedicated to the Mayan culture of old and contemporary. Unfortunately, most visitors are attracted to the flashier portions of the park, leaving us relatively alone to explore this.

Below is an example of a Mayan structure. Simple local materials, and open-air to allow for circulation.

Rural school house in open-air design.

Some Mayan gals in traditional garb.

Gateway from Mission Period.

Stone carvers now working on sculptures for the park.

Mayan ceremonial area.

The Bridge to Paradise is a really cool exhibit. It's a large hill, with real tombs. Each tomb is a unique work of art representing the buried individual. Some are simple, and other extremely elaborate. You could easily spend 1/2 a day at this exhibit alone. These pics are better appreciated when enlarged. Remember, to enlarge one, just put the cursor on in and right click...

This is a miniature cathedral. Very detailed and complete with stained glass.

The exhibit overlooks the Caribbean.

Evidence of more silicone deposits...

My favorite... Miguel the mechanic's tomb.

Another exhibit is a huge stained glass ceiling by Armonia Archarna. Composed of over 100,000 pieces, it covers a small cenote. As you are floating on the underground river trip, suddenly you look up and see this. Amazing.

Part of the ruins on the grounds of Xcaret Park.

Mimi stands by a carving of a jaguar - a favorite animal of the Mayans.
