Well, this is the first entry to our new travel series. I thought that I would start-off with something right here in San Diego. The Red Bull Air Races. They were held last weekend as part of San Diego's Fleet Week.
A few friends and myself bought some really nice tickets, with primo seating and all the food and drink we could consume in one day. Quite a challenge! But the trio was up to it! Pictured below are Don and Patrick (a.k.a. The Albino and The Iceman ) .
This was truly a "MANS" day. It started off with a parade of ships - war ships, a cruise liner, a pirate ship, and assorted aircraft for our viewing pleasure. Also, there were simulated navy assaults on ships by helicopters, parachuting onto a patrol boat, and acrobatics by a helicopter. Very entertaining. Across the bay are two aircraft carriers at dock.
The main event was a series of qualifying races by acrobatic racing planes through a course of inflated pylons. They run the course at about 200 mph and 20 ft. above the water. Quite a spectacle. There was a jumbo video screen near us to give inside views of the cockpit and close-ups of the racing planes in action.
The weather was perfect, and the location probably the best in the country. Makes one wonder why we bother to travel. But travel we must. The nice part is that when we return home from an extended trip - it's like we're on vacation again! Thankfully, we don't live in some god awful place like Pittsburgh where we would dread going home.
So welcome, as we begin our trip to NEW MEXICO....
